    I reckon a U47 or more traditonal style would be a better choice for female singers, sibilant singers. But on deeper, louder voices the Jr. is suprisingly nice. It's different to the U47, doesn't have the low low-mid depth, but oth there's a nice articulation. Gives quite a nice 'finished' sheen with air, but not harshness. It's maybe even slightly U87-ish. They are good for deep strummed dreadnought guitars, overheads where you might shelve or tame the recording anyway. The Jr. holds up suprisingly well as a kick drum mic too. Because, it's got the subs, and a decent beater presence, but again that low low mid focus helps get you where you might go with EQ anyway. If using it as kickout mic for the kickout sub 'boom', with a Beta52A for the kick-in beater thump/thwack.

    The Pre-73 nailed it. I own one, and it's changed my tracking life for the better! There's absolutely no need to go for a Neve when you have this, because it absolutely delivers the goods. Golden Age Audio are one of the few companies that make affordable gear that you'll never make a mistake buying, because they actually care about the quality. The Premier line has British-made Carnhill transformers, so it's also worth a look! Fun fact: someone on Gearslutz shot out the Premier Pre-73 with a Neve 1073 and put them to a null test - they almost completely cancelled each other out.

    • @adamfiascoVEVO

      @@aleksamrkela831 the Pre73 is indeed an excellent preamp. It doesn’t sound exactly like a Neve but it is a very good preamp in its own right! The only gripe I have with the golden age products I’ve own is their quality control - it isn’t that great. Units have failed and needed repair and the pots are very scratchy and noisey. Not a total dealbreaker but annoying nonetheless. Maybe they’ve improved in recent years?

      @adamfiascoVEVO Месяц назад

      Thanks for watching! Yes the differences between the units are pretty huge. A few people have commented about the difference in level which is a totally fair point and in hindsight I probably should’ve matched them better before exporting. However I think this highlights an important difference… Both units had their gain set to the same level on the preamp during recording so it’s pretty obvious the Neve runs hotter than the GAP. Also you don’t need it to be perfectly level matched to hear the Neve has far bigger lows and low mids than the GAP! The GAP is a great unit and very good value for money. But imo the sound and build of the Neve is far superior.

    What I'm hearing is you're a professional, you have pro gear, you mix in a pro environment, and you know how to get what you're looking for from your studio. From watching a few other videos what I'm getting is these are really more for folks like me that are in the hobbyist/prosumer category where we have some decent gear mixed in with a less than ideal mixing environment. I have a couple of Mackies and some desktop speakers I use for mixing, but it's in my home office so not an ideal environment by any means. I'll often find myself carving or boosting frequencies that I can visually see in my EQ but can't hear the changes until I go to other rooms. I think I'm going to give these a 30 day try and see if they can highlight room variations enough so I don't find myself spending hours testing on various systems only to find that when I go to the car it sounds like garbage!

    • @adamfiascoVEVO
      @adamfiascoVEVO Месяц назад

      This is pretty much it exactly! I wasn’t really getting the benefit from mixing on these vs in my own room. Sure I could learn them but I don’t really need to! For anyone who travels about a lot or has a less than ideal monitoring environment though these would be absolutely incredible and a no brainer!

    Neve level was higher and not well matched

    • @adamfiascoVEVO
      @adamfiascoVEVO Месяц назад

      Both preamps had the gain set to the same level but the Neve definitely runs hotter and has a bigger bump in the low mids whereas the GAP is more scooped. In hindsight I definitely could have matched the levels better in the video clip and I’ll definitely do that in future, but they were set the same on the way in which is the main thing and I think highlights an important difference between the two units. Regardless you can clearly hear the differences in sound between them.

      Totally agree… Tele’s are one of the most versatile guitars around. Interestingly I had a USA Tele and it just didn’t sound or play as well as this cheap Mex! Ended up selling it!

    I use both in series depending on the source material

      Yeah that’s what I showed in the 3rd example… running them in series can really sound amazing and you get all the benefits of both units.

      Lol… I agree to a point! The skill of the engineer is crucial. But there comes a point where you just need a better mic or a mic that’s better suited to an application 😂

    I really think these headphones are for people who just don't have a proper mix room...I think if someone already has a room acoustically designed for mixing, then they've got the real deal...just an opinion...thanks for the video, and hope you and yours are doing great!
